Brief Description:  Fabricated wing root fairings

Well, back to the hangar workshop today to continue work on the wings. The task for today was to fabricate the fairing that covers the gap between the port wing structure and the side of the fuselage. This fairing comes in two pieces, the forward and aft fairings. The aft fairing runs from the trailing edge of the wing to the main spar. The forward fairing overlaps the aft fairing at the main spar and then wraps around the leading edge of the wing overlapping the bottom fuselage skin.

The task wasn't too difficult but patience is rewarded. The aft fairing had to have a joggle fabricated at the main spar where the forward fairing overlaps. I managed this with a hand seamer, some maple blocks, a bench vise, and some C-clamps. It was a little tricky but turned out pretty good. Next was getting the fairing material clecoed to the wing root and match drilling it to the wing skin at the root rib (the fuel tank is the leading edge of the wing forward of the main spar).

The last step was to mark and trim a 3/16" gap between the fairing and the fuselage skin. This area will be sealed with weatherstrip material). I think it turned out ok.
