I started the work session finishing the balancing of the starboard elevator. I started by drilling a third #30 pilot hole in the counterweight. By the time I enlagred it to 1/4" it wasn't necessary to drill as deep. I got the elevator to balance in trail or slightly up.
Next, I installed the port elevator and found it to be light. I was afraid of this since the port counterweight has a significant amount of material already removed per the shop instructions. In this case I had to add about 55 grams of weight. I did this at least temporarily with a stack of fender washers held on with an AN bolt and platenut. I had already added platenuts on both elevators for adding weight if required.
I believe if the elevators could have been balanced togetther it wouldn't have been necessary to add the weights on the port side. Anyway, every A&P I talked to said to balance the surfaces separately, so I did.
