Brief Description:  Service bulletin 14-01-31 (Part 1)

I have decided to install Service Bulletin 14-01-31 on the tail of my RV-8 as preventative maintenance. My approach is a combination of the steps as outlined in Van's document and some procedures I have seen on the Van's Air Force site and documented by local builders. I began by removing all the rivets attaching the inboard nose and main ribs so they could be removed. I also removed all the rivets from the inboard ribs out to the middle rib on the rear spar. I then removed five rivets from the inboard ribs out along the forward spar. Removing these rivets allows me to peel the skin back enough to access the eight (8) rivets on each side of the forward spar so the reinforcing bars may be drilled out and removed.

I removed all the rivets in the center of the forward spar that attaches the reinforcing bars. Before drilling out the remaining sixteen (16) rivets under the skins I have decided to order some new drill bits. I think fresh bits will be easier to keep centered and cut faster when removing the final rivets. These rivets will be challenging and it's essential the holes are not deformed.

I will also order some short rivet sets both straight and offset to work inside the skins. I aso plan to order some Cherry Max rivets in the event they are significantly easier to install. The latest Van's document lists the appropriate size and designation for acceptable blind rivets.
