Brief Description:  Canopy trimming - Part 5

I finally got up the courage to make the big cut to separate the windscreen from the slider portion of the bubble. I had my doubts but in the end I got a pretty clean cut on the plexiglass. I think the windscreen will be relatively easy to fit to the skin and roll bar. A little more trimming will be required in the last 3-4 inches ending at the aft edge of the roll bar. I think the glass will just intersect the skin at the top edge and pull into contact with the bar. If not, the glass will just barely overlap the skin. I won't know exactly how to make this final cut until the slider part of the canopy is completed. I want to get the two pieces of glass meeting as close as possible.

I clamped the bubble on the frame at the aft end and found that the glass pulls down along the sides and moves slightly forward at the bow. I went along both sides and marked for the next trim. I want to get the glass to where it comes down into contact with the horizontal frame tubing and then extends about 1/2-5/8" beyond where the rivets will go. I then got the electrical tape and marked the new cut line. I then went on the inside of the canopy and put a blue painters tape behind the black tape. I find it easier to follow the line between blue and black than black and clear glass, something about the way my eyes focus.

Once this cut is made, the canopy will go back on and the arcs will be recut where the glass contacts the vertical frame tubes. I will clamp it again and see if there is still more to trim. Once I get the drilling and clecoing done from back to front, I will make the final "length" trim at the bow. After that I can either finish fitting the windscreen or take a look at the canopy skirt. Wow, more hair pulling fun.
