Brief Description:  Floor scuff protectors installed

I bonded the floor scuff protectors on the rear cockpit panels and the footwells today. I began by scotchbriting the panels, washing, and wiping them down with acetone. I then made the cardboard patterms and cut the vinyl protectors. Next, the protectors were positioned and the area around them masked and taped off so any overspray of the 3M cement would be minimized.

Both the aluminum panels and the mating surfaces of the vinyl protectors were sprayed with the contact cement. The vinyl mats were carefully positioned and rubbed out using fingers and a wall paper seam roller. Any excess cement was removed from around the edges of the vinyl.

When ready to paint the panels I will mask off the vinyl surfaces, prime, and apply the color coat. I think this installation sequence worked better than painting first and then applying the vinyl.

One last comment. The 3M cement is extremely sticky and once the materials are mated it is very difficult to reposition. You need to concentrate on getting the position correct the first time.
