Brief Description:  Empenage lower fairing

When I was finishing up the airplane, getting it ready to fly I elected not to use the pre-formed fiberglass empennage fairing that came with the upper fairing because I didn't want to take the time to join the two fairings together. Instead, I just used the flat aluminum closeout and rubber seal that Van's supplied with the fuselage kit. My intention was always to install the fiberglass fairing when I had more time available once the airplane was flying.

This week the weather forecast is for rain for almost a week so it's a good time do the fairing work. I need to get it complete before the airplane goes in for paint in the fall

Today I trimmed the lower fairings to fit, then drilled #30 holes in them and clecoed them in place. The forward end of the top flanges did not match the contour of the horizontal stabilizer but they could be pushed up against the stab with just a little force. To join the upper and lower fairings I had to layup some fiberglass/epoxy splice plies over the joints. I made wedges out of some rigid insulation foam and pushed them between the forward clecos and the fairing which worked well to hold the flange up against the stabilizer while the epoxy cured.
