Brief Description: Thoughts on exterior finsih
|
|
I was planning on doing a mix of paint and polish. I want it to be lighter, since I am adding so much weight in extra equipment. The first picture shows a rough outline of my plan. I would polish the body and add some dark blue to bring together the fiberglass parts. I don't want polished wings due to the reflection. I would plan on painting a design in blue with a grey or silver background. I don't want the "I tried to match the pilot" color grey. I am looking more of a warbird color. I listened to the Sonex Flight podcast on vinyl wrapping. I discounted this previously, but I am now considering it. Vinyl is durable, patchable, half the weight of paint, very affordable, quick to apply, less prep work, less sterile environment needed, less special equipment needed, and I can always make changes. As much as I like polish, I don't really want to spend 40 hours running the generator and buffing. I can achieve the warbirdish look with vinyl and have a durable good looking finish. The plane is going to live in the hangar, but I will commute to the bay area. The vinyl should also help keep moisture from entering through the rivet holes and contributing to corrosion on the interior.
