Today I took a "practice" retirement day, so instead of reporting to Wrangler for work I went to the airplane factory and spent the day woking on my project. Too early to tell for sure but I think I could like this......
Anyway, a productive day working on a labor intensive component. Fisrt I deburred and dimpled the right elevator skin and stiffeners, then back riveted the stiffeners to the skin. This went pretty well but I found it very difficult to get everything to lie flat near the trailing edge bend where I had to push the opposite skin out of the way. As a result I had several rivets to drill out and replace, then on the second side I used a mushroom set and bucking bar on the rivets nearest the bend. Not a perfect solution, but it got the job done.
After breaking for lunch I worked on the left elevator, drilled the stiffeners to the skin, marked and removed them, then deburred and dimpled the skin and stiffeners. I removed the blue plasitc film on the skin over the rivet holes in preparation for riveting. Then I drilled, deburred and dimpled the elevator trim access cover plate and riveted the platenuts to it.
A productive full day at the alternative office.
