Brief Description:  Engine build school

Day #2 . Installed fuel pump and drive gears using timing marks on rear acessory housing. Mounted rear acessary case on engine and torqued mount bolts, layed out all four cylinders and ring sets and measured each ring in each cylinder for proper tolerance. Used the ring grinder to shorten one end of each ring that was too tight for the feeler gauge tolerance. filed , cleaned and oiled all rings with stp and mineral oil mixture. Installed all rings on pistons. Installed the four thru bolts to engine bIock, these are driven thru with a mallet till you have equal threads on both sides. We then installed the four cylinders and nuts and torqued to spec's.Mounted the cylinders to the engine and torqued.Installed the correct piston for each cylinder and using the lycoming ring compression tool, installed the pistons and installed the piston pins with the plastic end caps whitch hold the pistons in and the caps will prevent the pins from rubbing on the cylinder walls.
After prepping the rocker arms and rods( checking for burs etc and lubing), I then installed the push rods and rocker arms and checked go/no go tolerance's on rocker arms. To do this I used the timing mark in open acessory case and turned the engine on the crank for top dead center fo #1 and a checking the rocker arm for that cylinder for clearance holding the arm in and checking for a go/no with a lycoming special feeler, and the same for each cylinder in order, Rotating the engine 180 degrees for the next firing order cylnder. One was out of tolerance so to adjust in tolerance you have to change the push rod, For mine, since one was too tight I had to go to a shorter one. Installed valve covers and torqued to 50" lbs
