Brief Description:  Corvair Engine "core" #1

It was time, I decided to start to look into the availability of Corvair Engines. I was surprized to find that I found several at different salvage yards within 40 miles of my home I spent some time, effort and fuel to drive around to them and check out what they have and what they wanted for it.Wow....this was an education in it's self. Salvage yard owners are - for the most part - interesting people. Some are friendly, some not, some helpful, some are out-right unfriendly and rude. They don't suffer what they think maybe "fools" well and a small number (2 in my case) decided that a 70+ year old man looking for a 40 year old engine from a car many consider pure-junk is not only a fool but a "damn fool" and if he's dumb enough to let slip that he's gonna make it into an "AIRPLANE ENGINE" they act like he's a certified refuge from the funny farm. I actually found a yard that has a late model complete car with 70,000 miles, a complete - free turning engine with what appears to be clean engine oil.....outstanding. When I inquired as to his asking price he demanded to know what parts I wanted I replied "the complete engine". He gave me a price and I agreed. When I agreed he asked if I wanted the transmission too. No, I replied just the engine/bellhousing. He reacted, in an angry manner and told me the bell-housing was part of the transmission and if I wanted it I'd have to buy the transmission too at more than twice the cost. I attempted to tell him that the bell housing is the rear seal covering the Cam/Crank gear area of the engine block and bolted to the engine. The Transmission connection to it, I said, was a formed plate that was indeed part of the transmission. I think that offended him an he told me that I could buy em both or nothing. I told him I'd think about it an let him know. I left to look for other places. It was late in the day so I when home and pulled up some exploded shots of the Corvair engine clearly showing the bell housing as part of it and not the transmission.
