Brief Description:  Beginning Elevator Final Assembly

This afternoon I had a little time available to begin the final assembly of the elevators.

At this point, the spars are ready to go, as well as the ends of each spar. All of the riveting was done with the pneumatic squeezer. All of the rivets came out except for one that I had to drill out. Unfortunately, that one rivet was the result of me not paying attention when I pulled the trigger. Oh well.

Also, a few notes with regards to the first photo below:

1. You'll notice the un-primed areas. The portion of the skin at the trailing edge and the two perpendicular lines are where tank sealant will be used.

2. The perpendicular portion will use some rather tough foam blocks to help support the structure.

3. You'll also see some unprimed parts in near the top of the skin. Those parts are the ribs that will attach to the skins and spars. After doing some further research--and seeing a comment in EAA's "Sport Aviation" magazine--I decided not to prime them. Specifically, the writer of the article said "Cessna and Piper never primed, why should we?" The writer was disussing saving weight.

Back to the priming argument: I, personally, am torn over this topic (like much of the homebuilt community). I do believe that areas that are to be exposed to weather, or areas that may be subject to pooling water, should have some extra protection. However, Van himself has always played things "light weight." Anyway...time will tell. If I wrong, I'll end up rebuilding the elevator. HOWEVER, I'm willing to bet good money that I wouldn't need to rebuild it at any time before a TBO on a brand new engine.

That's my $0.02.
