Brief Description:  Engine Transfer

Engine mounting is one of those big milestones in any aircraft build. I’ve done as much as I could while the engine was in the stand, such as all of the horizontal to vertical modifications, but there are many things that can only be completed once inside the helicopter frame that you will read about in the coming weeks. At this point, I needed to make the engine as streamlined as possible for the transfer.

My great buddy Tommy agreed to help me guide the engine into the frame and be another set of hands and eyes while I guide the engine hoist into the aircraft without hitting anything. My wife Dawn was also another set of eyes and assistance.

I prepared the engine mounting bolts with the proper sequence of bolts, washers, rubber vibration mounts, more washers, and finally the nut and cotter pin. I used dish soap to lube the bolts through the rubber so they didn’t bind as they felt the weight of the engine.

The first and really only unforeseen problem was that I needed to remove the oil filter from the bottom of the engine due to a lack of clearance while it was hanging from the hoist. Not a big deal. Other than that, my crack helicopter pit crew was amazing and we patiently guided it over inch by inch, then down millimeter by millimeter.

I couldn’t have done this without Tommy’s help and understanding of the critical actions needed. He’s an amazing custom motorcycle designer/builder, so this is not his first rodeo. Thanks Brother!!
