Brief Description:  Collective Control Box

Okay, after the friction control nightmare, I thought I would do the simplest task ever and installed end plugs on my tail rotor pedals. That said, even this was a hassle since this isn’t something specified for the helicopter. I ordered 5 different kinds of plugs online since I really didn’t know which was going to fit or look good. The result of my final attempt was perfect, as you can see in the photo below.

The next was the fabrication of the collective control box. This started with just a big square piece of sheetmetal with some labels on it. You are required to determine the proper orientation and then cut the panel to match the odd shape of the collective control box. Also, the panel scratches VERY easily, so I masked off the entire piece as I worked.

The other fun installation was the installation of the throttle and collective grips, which happen to be Harley Davidson motorcycle grips. Very cool! The pilot’s throttle grip needed to be modified for the control box, so after looking at photos of other installations, I carefully cut the end of the grip off and installed it. I was in the bicycle industry for over a decade and even had my own bicycle shop. In that time, I probably installed thousands on handlebar grips, and the trick I used for years was the application of hairspray to the inside of the grip before installation. The grip goes on very easily, but within seconds glues itself to the bar. If you ever need to remove them, all you need to do is use compressed air under the back edge, and they would come right off. Works like a charm!

The final odd part was riveting the governor adjustment switch to the panel. I saw several ways that others had installed it, and decided this was my best bet. I finished by carefully painting the rivet heads black to match.
