Brief Description:  More Pitch Motor and Panel Work

After talking to Safari today, I learned a lot about what my next step needed to be, and they also solve a few other random mysteries for me, like “What the hell is that part for?!”

I now know where the pitch motor springs attach, but I still can’t attach them because I’m missing the control rod, and still need to install the cyclic arms. The cyclic flanges on the frame needed to be widened for the cyclic, and the cyclic arm itself needed to be filed internally to accept the head of the control arm. Once I got that all worked out and installed, it became clear that I didn’t have enough clearance for the eventual installation and movement of the control rod and pitch spring. In hindsight, I should have cut the hole in the aft kick panel in more of a pear shape rather than the oval that was supplied on the original Safari templates. The problem now is that I have to cut out a TON of sheetmetal without damaging the aft panel. The solution is going to be to purchase a metal punch kit and try to cut out small areas at a time and then trim and file them to their final shape. The tool is on order and will be here in two days. Another project on hold…

What WAS great is that I picked up the new panel I made from the paint shop, and it looks great! Eddie, my painter, didn’t even change me! I installed it and it is amazing how stiff and strong it makes that section of the helicopter.
