Brief Description:  Headboard Wiring Inspection

I have been amazingly lucky when it’s come to the electrical system and my wiring. I was able to check almost everything on the aircraft with the exception of the items on the headboard, which include chart lights, the rpm warning horn, and the headset jacks.

I slung the headset in proximity to where it is going to go and loosely attached it to the door frames so I could get back behind it and make the connections with the plugs I installed on both side of each harness so the headboard could be easily removed as needed.

I was all smiles when the lights and horn came alive, and even more excited with the headset worked especially since I drew the wiring diagram to the helicopter jacks myself. I was so excited that I called my wife into the shop to have her talk to me on the Bose headset on the right side as I used my flight helmet on the left side for the first time.

I plugged both in, but the right side wasn’t working. I switched headsets, and still the right side wasn’t working. I was devastated, and not looking forward to the troubleshooting and realization that I probably screwed up the wiring somewhere.

The next few hours was checking my wiring schematic, cross-referencing the radio D-Sub connection points diagram, looking up the headset plug on-line and walking through the shared and separate wires that connect to the 4 contacts on each outlet. I couldn’t find anything that I did wrong yet.

I then cracked open the pod and rang the wires from the back of the radio to the headset jacks. To my surprise, all of the wires were fine and going everywhere I intended them to go…what the heck is going on?! As it turns out…I just didn’t push the headset plug together hard enough when connecting the back of the headboard. (So frustrating…).
