Brief Description:  E-Mag Fuses/Switches

The E-Mags continue to be a bit of a mystery for me. The good news is that E-Mag offers great information and instruction online, and I have my buddy Lynn (PA Tom’s close friend who wired his helicopter for him) to help troubleshoot with me.

When Lynn wired Tom’s ship, he had the help of an A&P to guide him as well. I didn’t understand why they did what they did regarding shut off switches and fuses for the E-Mags because I had never seen that before. What I didn’t realize until later was that I hadn’t seen it before because all of the aircraft I had flown has been certified and used standard magnetos.

After walking through the instructions and requirements with Lynn, I realized that I needed to add two independent slow burn circuit breaker/switches, or two standard switches and fuses to protect them. Safari had supplied one breaker, but according to the E-Mag requirements, you can’t simply wire both E-Mags to the same breaker as I have seen them do repeatedly. I doubt it’s the end of the world, but it’s not supposed to be like that.

I thought of a number of places to mount them, but ended up drilling holes and mounting them on the console just above the switches and below the quad gauges. I’m having labels made for them right now.
