Brief Description:  Tail Boom Wiring

I would love to have the tail boom on the helicopter right now, but I can’t fit it into my garage shop with the boom installed. As you know, I have a hanger out at the Tracy airport, and I’ve been spending many hours getting it ready for the transfer. I’ve built a gantry crane, workbenches, shelving, installed a refrigerator and compressor, and I’m stocking it as a second shop with duplicate tools and boxes.

I do actually need to install the boom before I move it to the airport because I need the leverage to negotiate the helicopter out of the shop and down the driveway. The day that I install the boom is the same day it leaves the house.

That said, I can’t simply stop the wiring process until the boom is in place. As such, I’ve run long lengths of wire for the aft navigation light, the strobe sync, the tail rotor chip detector, the boom strobe, and the radio antenna. These wires are just coiled up right now and rest on the carb heat box. They are, however, already connected to the power, ground, and switches as necessary. The jackets and stand offs will be added once the tail boom is in place.

I want to get as much done on the helicopter when I don’t have to leave the house to do it. I can only imagine that it’s going to be more of a drag to have it away from home, even though the airport is only 7 minutes away.
