Brief Description:  Painting and Baking the Instrument Panel

Since the instrument pod still wasn’t yet painted, I went by the paint shop and borrowed it for a day so I could make the final fitting of the instrument panel to the instrument pod before I painting the panel.

After the final filing was done, I prepared and masked the panel as necessary and started the painting process. The painting requires three coats of paint, each applied 5 minutes apart. The first coat is vertical, the next horizontal, and the final coat is at a 45 degree angle to the rest. The coats need to be thick, and the wrinkling process doesn’t actually begin for a few hours after the last coat is applied. You are not suppose to handle the painted object for at least 24 hours, and not assemble for at least 48 hours.

To cure the paint, you need to bake it in an oven for one hour at 200 degrees. It doesn’t smell good as it’s baking, but luckily if you have a fan, and open door, and an understanding wife, you’re all set. Now I just need the instruments!
