Brief Description:  Headboard and Accessories

The headboard was actually the very first piece of sheet metal I made for the helicopter. Since the original fabrication, I have continually modified it for the various components that need to be added to it such as the headset jacks, the fuel shut off valve, the duel chart lights, the “Experimental” placard, the rpm warning horn, seatbelt ports, and seatbelt grommets.

As you can see from the photos there is a lot going on in the front of the panel, but as you might imagine, there is even more going on in the back. Each one of the electrical components required wiring not just at the panel, but all the way back to either the pod or console, the main bus, switches, and grounding bus. Once the wiring is run, I installed a Molex plug at the connection on the headboard, and the wire bundles will require standoffs once the circuits have been tested.

I fitted the headset jack panel, but I will still need to wire it for the jacks tomorrow. The chart lights are individually wired to switches on the console. The seatbelt ports needed additional modifications, and my wife had a great solution for my concern over damage resulting from someone releasing their seatbelt from the 4-point buckle and letting is retract too quickly into the headboard. She suggested rubber pads made out of the grommets that I determined were not going to work due to the friction caused with the retractable belt. I cut the out side off and adhered them to the panel with 3M 5200.
