Brief Description:  Panel Prep for Painting

Taking everything off of the frame always sucks because it looks and feels like you are just going backwards all over again.

Once I finished the punch list of pre-painting tasks, I was ready to start taking apart the helicopter panel by panel. I decided to address all the redlines I made yesterday as the panels came off the ship. That made the process much slower, but I think I will save time in the end.

Also, yesterday I FOUND A PAINTER!! I have been kicking around doing the painting myself, but having NO experience was not the resume I wanted to bring to such an important task. They are working up a price for me, but I like the guys who will be doing the work, so I’m hoping it works out. They are about 10 minutes away from my house.

The plan is that I want to make sure that all of the panels are protected and not simply bare sheet metal. I also didn’t want to assemble the ship and have any raw overlapping seams.

To date, I have been able to prep and paint the areas I needed to assemble before moving onto the next step of the build. My goal is to paint each of the panels white, assemble, then bring the “completed” ship back to the painter to paint the exterior scheme. This way there is no exposed bare metal, and the inside of the ship is a brilliant and clean white. That’s the plan so far….

I honestly had no idea about how many panels there would be to paint, so I told the painter that he could expect about 20 pieces. At the end of the day after the frame of the ship was bare, I counted 45 pieces!! Uh oh! I’m going to try and inventory the parts before letting them leave my hands. I’m a little freaked out about them leaving my sight and getting lost or damage.

Hoping to have them to the shop this week.
