Brief Description:  Interior Cabin Floor

The final cabin floor fitting took a little bit of time because I wanted to make sure that the holes on the floor matched the existing holes on the aft rib as close as possible. These aft screws will be going through the floor, the aft kick plate panel, and finally the lower rib. The aft screws on the far sides of the floor panel will be going through the floor, the side kick panel, the aft kick panel, and finally the frame of the helicopter and into a nut plate. As you can imagine, the coordination between all of the panels is critical.

I started out with a ver small drill bit and made pilot holes so I could determine exactly where all of the panels were lining up once they were clecoed in place at the upper attachment points. Since the holes will eventually be accommodating a large screw, I have some flexibility on the size and exact position of the hole location. The main concern is that I’m hitting the rib and frame in a spot that will allow for the nut plate. There was a lot of installing and removing of the floor as I worked through the process, but in the end, I got the result I was looking for.

One additional Item that I have been considering is access options for once I fabricate and install the center console and instrument pod to the floor. While the floor is only screwed to the frame, once the pod and wiring is complete, there will be no access to anything below the floorboard. I am concerned about the items that will be installed in that area such as antennas, lights, pitot tube heating vents, frame welds, floor rivets, etc. My solution, I think, is going to make two large access panels, one one on each side of the cabin. I would like to follow triangle shape of the frame and make them as large as possible, but I want to be careful not to weaken the floor or the foundation of the pod. I will need to think about this more, but I think I need to decide before I start to fabricate the console.
