OK, I’m just about ready for these so it is time to build. I looked at some other builder logs to see what alternatives there were to the sketchy drawings Van’s provides. I ended up improvising some off the plans – you actually have to with dimensions called out as “approx. 2”, “approx. 3”, etc.
I used a 4x4 for the backbone of the cradle instead of the 2x4 called out. I had the 4x4 in stock and I think it was a nice substitution. The rest is pretty much by the plans. I added ½” plywood gussets on the joints to help stiffen it up and caster wheels on the bottom. I used foam pipe insulation for padding as called out. There is some unfinished work at the front spar stub end. I didn’t quite know what height to use there for the indentation to hold the spar stub. I think I’ll wait until I load one of the wings up and figure it out then.
