Brief Description:  Wing countersinking

Last step for the wing LE’s (before permanently attaching them) is to machine countersink the front spar flange for the aft edge of the dimpled LE skin. There are quite a few holes here that are tightly spaced.

With the top wing skins still on the wing assembly, the countersink cage overlaps the skin - so I held off on those and started on the bottom side flange. I noticed that I will need to machine counter sink the holes in the spar flange for the wing skins as well. So with the countersink cage depth already set I started in on those also. This gets a little monotonous. I was using my cordless drill for this work for better control. With the minimal depth of these countersinks, and the thickness of the spare flange, you don’t need to worry about the countersink coming through the other side like you do with the #8 countersinks for the tank skin and access covers. With the right tank off the stand I kept on countersinking the flange for the bottom skin. The NiMH batteries on my drill are getting old, so frequent charging swaps were required.

I did a trial fit up with the right leading edge to make sure the countersinks were deep enough. It looked good.

If I keep going on this I might as well dimple the ribs and get everything ready for the wing main skins. We’ll see - it is nice mindless work to do when I have some time.
