Brief Description:  Z Brack prep and location

First, I finished up the edge finishing on the remaining z brackets. I then laid out each bracket on the spars (checking the drawing for orientation) and labeled each by side (L/R), and position (1-7). The Checkoway method* provides a better method then Van’s plans for precisely locating the brackets and ensuring a good fitting tank assembly to the spar/outboard leading edge - before drilling the z bracket to tank baffle.

The z brackets come without any pilot holes for location of either interface, so the first step is to locate and drill the middle (#12) hole of three for attaching each bracket to the spar. The spar is predrilled with three holes for each z bracket. With one hole located and drilled in each z bracket, the second step is to match drill the other two holes from the spar after locating and clamping the bracket. One additional feature of the Checkoway method is to slightly offset the spar to z bracket holes to facilitate assembly later on. The most inboard z bracket hole pattern is offset 1/16” from center away from the bracket web. This allows better wrench/socket access to these bolts. For the other six brackets, the hole pattern is shifted toward the web slightly to enable better access to the pull rivets for the bracket to tank baffle attachment.

For the six outboard brackets, I first drew a line 11/32” away from the outer flange edge. Then I located the center point (~2.25” from each end). I used a spring loaded punch to mark this spot, and then drilled a #40 hole. I then walked it over to the drill press and opened the hole up to #12. I then checked the hole location by making sure the plate nut properly fit and did not ride up the flange to web radius. For the inboard bracket, I located the hole 11/32” away from the outside of the web flange. The similar check is to ensure that you can get a socket over the bolt in this location.

After drilling the center holes in each bracket I moved over to the spars and utilized the center hole and some hardware store #10 machine s
