Brief Description:  Control Stick Assembly Part 7

Well, I have to admit I was a little disappointed this evening. I welded up the ring fittings for the control stick assembly. I messed with them, tweaked them, adjusted them, but in the end they ended up in the scrap bin. The bolt that holds the assembly to the fuselage won’t lay flat on the fitting. I measured and drilled the pilot holes for the AN3 bolts per the plans, looking from the bottom of the fitting. What happened is the bend radius for the support angles was a little too much and the vertical leg was just a tad too long, not allowing the angle to nestle closer to the 1 1/18 ring. I realized I was in trouble when the pilot holes were drilled. I took a chainsaw file to the holes and enlarged them toward the outside of the fitting, but the adjustment wasn’t enough and the bolts didn’t lay flat. The funny thing was on each fitting, one bolt was ok and the other didn’t sit flat.

I have adopted the saying “Perfection is the enemy of completion” and I really did try to save these fittings. But, in the end, if the old anal self was in charge I would have knocked out two new fittings in the time I wasted fiddling and diddling trying to make the originals work. Lesson learned in time management and I’ll write it off to welding practice. Moving on…
