Brief Description: Practice and Rod trial
I needed to weld on the fuselage today, so I thought I would get in a little practice. I just wanted to run some rod to get back into the swing of things and one of the things I tried were different rod alloys.
Publications are pretty silent on the type of rod to use for gas welding, so i did a little impromptu research. The main rod alloys I found common for gas welding are RG-45, RG60, ER70S-2 and ER70S-6, RG-45 being the all-around rod from back in the day when gas was all there was. I had some problems welding with ER70S-6, so I did a little test with three different rods. I ran a bead with RG-60, ER70S-2 and ER70S-6 on the same piece of mild steel to get an idea how they reacted to the torch. The welds don't look pretty because they were the first that I did in awhile (I certainly did better after some practice), but it was fun comparing them. Once I cleaned them, they flowed pretty much the same except for the S-6, which layed a bit flatter. I setteled on the ER70S-2, but any of them would have been fine.
