Brief Description:  Stripping Paint

I took advantage of the day to strip some paint off of the worst float to repair. It was in the forties today, mild compared to the previous days and it's forecast to snow tomorrow so time to get busy.

First order of business is what to wear. I wore clothes that could be tossed afterwards, safety glasses at ALL times, gloves and a hat. I put the stripper on a section of the float and waited for it to work. The minimum temperature recommended by the manufacturer was 65F. Shoot, we're lucky to get that in summer! It was in the low to mid 40s in the afternoon. I put the stripper on and waited 15 minutes. Then, I started to work the paint with a grey scotchbrite pad. It worked pretty well. I then left the next batch on for 45 minutes and worked a little better, but I'm sure the low temperature didn't help any. It's a real tedious and messy job, especially getting all those rivets with a small stainless brush. That stripper is some nasty, nasty stuff, but it may have met its match on the black anti-skid paint on top. That stuff was pretty tenacious. I'll have to go over that again later. Because of time and temperature, the weather window I was working in was small. I wasn't able to get the whole float done, but I got probably about 3/4ths of the top. The bottom is coming off, so I won't waste any time there. I couldn't imagine how much is involved with stripping a whole aircraft, wings and all.

After I finished stripping, I went over all the areas with the pressure washer to remove any remaining stripper. I then inverted the float to wash out each compartment with the pressure washer to get any residue that may have fallen in.
