Brief Description:  Rework cowling

Like many others I was nearing a stoke getting my cowling to fit. After initial trimming I could see no way that I would not be adding material- lots of material. There was a huge gap at the bottom with an odd unevenness at the lower bowl. Just too much material would need to be added.

I read what Sonex had to say about the “The Cowls Too Small” argument and (pardon the criticism), they came off a bit arrogantly. However, after studying Bob Meyers website I felt I had to try. Just can’t explain why trimming so much material off should actually make the “too small cowl” become, well, larger(?).

Never the less, I did it and although I still can’t wrap my head around why, it worked. Incredibly. I am so grateful for the Sonex direction but especially to Bob’s uber detailed website. Perhaps the company could add even more instruction to the supplemental sheets; I’m not particularly stupid and yet I couldn’t see this “technique” as valid.

I'll post pictures with the next entry.

I've had to remove the previously drilled side hinges. I've now glassed over them and filled the holes. I'll have to relocate and place the hinges later. Very pleased that the gaps are gone.
