OK, now I know how all those building hours add up -- am I building an airplane, or just learning how to prep metal? I decided to go with the relatively quick and easy way to prevent corrosion by using rattle-can SEM self-etching primer. Works for Randy Lervold, works for me! Still, I spent a lot of time prepping each part for the painting -- hand scuffing with gray ScotchBrite pads, wash all parts with Palmolive to degrease, rinse, dry, then wipe down with Acetone and a microfiber cloth. If this is the easy way to prime, then my hat's off to anybody who does the Alodine and epoxy process. I decided to prime all the components of the horizontal stabilizer, but only the mating surfaces on the inside of the skins. Will trust the virtues of alclad, a hangar, and TLC to keep corrosion at bay until I lose my medical someday.
Learned a couple of good lessons in this stage: 1) Don't even think about priming in Kansas when the wind is 20 gusting to 30. Duh. 2) I own a respirator. Why don't I use it next time? 3) Patience is a virtue, but an iPod with 600 songs is a life saver.
Despite all the taping required to get the skins ready for priming, when I peeled everything off it really looked kind of cool. Got me to thinking -- maybe a polished aircraft would be the way to go...
Now, let the aircraft assembly begin!
