Brief Description:  The first rivets - horizontal stabilizer spar.

Since the spars havwe been primed as well as the elevator bearing part, I figured it was time to start the riveting. The HS-411BPP plates are riveted on each side of the VA-146 bearing. These are the FIRST rivets done on the plane, only about 12,000 more to go? :-)
The pneumatic squeezer made a nice, easy, job of this.
I then started the rear spar with the HS-603PP spar and the HS-609PP backing spars. The tape over the "do not rivet" holes is a smart idea. You can really get into this and lose track of where you are going otherwise.
Van's callout in the manual for the rivets calls for the 4-6 rivet which tecnically is a little too short. So when you rivet it in, you get either the correct shop side height, and narrower diameter. Other option is too short height, and a proper diameter. I searched through a bunch of forums, builder logs, and this question comes up all the time. Most just go with it, but I needed to know if I go wider/taller on the rivets. Today I flew up to Arlington and met an RV7 builder who was doing his annual on this plane and had panels off. He invited me up to see the plane. After questions, getting my fingers in his complted empennage, and more qustions I was conviced that simply fitting the shop head to fill the diameter would be fine. The rivets on the spar will be under a shear load, rather than a "pull" load (if those are the proper terms!) so it should be fine.
