Brief Description:  Making parts from aluminum angle

I finally started to build my Sonex today. After looking through the plans and assessing my skills at this point, I decided to start with building the parts you need to make from the raw stock that came with the kit.

I decided to start with making parts from the aluminum angle. This seemed like a good place to start since this only requires cutting at this point and no bending. I used this opportunity to get a feel for measuring and cutting the aluminum. The first pieces I did were SNX-F08-10 (Forward Attach Angle) and SNX-F08-11 (Aft Attach Angle). I also cut out the blank for SNX-F08-08 (Flap Detent Angle). This piece is a little more complicated to cut out the profile for the flap detents. I still need to figure out the best way to cut this complicated pattern.

I also had a chance to use both the Scotch-Brite wheel and the Scotch-Brite belt. I found the wheel to be difficult to control. The wheel appears to be somewhat out of round so the work piece bounces against the edge when you try to debur it. I had much better luck using the belt. It was much easier to control and to be more accurate. I will still give the wheel a chance; maybe I can true up the edge and then it will work much better. Otherwise, I will order more of the belts and just use those.
