Brief Description: Battery tray modification for transponder/ELT
|
|
I saw a brief picture online of a battery tray modification. Went to find again and wasn't able to locate. However, I got the just of the modification and decided that this would be a great place to install a remote Transponder and ELT. Space is limited in the RV8. I dialed the thickness of the battery tray to be .063, so that is the extended base material used. I first got online to find out the dimensions of the Garmin remote transponder that I plan on using. The 23ES. Also the ELT I will be using is the Artex 345. With these installation dimensions, I decided to make the tray with both sides to have a platform of 4.5 x 11. I was not sure if the .063 would be stable enough, so I reinforced the underside with 1/16" thick 3/4" angle stock. The tray is within 1.25 inches from the side longerons if not sturdy enough. I can attach small angle stock to the sides to make more stable if necessary. After assembly, with the additional angle, it seems really sturdy. Happy so far, I will have a friend of mine double check. Also, upon installing the angle, I had to drill rudder cable access holes to allow the clables to pass thru. No problem, the angle is just big enough to allow for another snap bushing.
