Brief Description:  Water pump and forward motor mount

Worked on setting up the water pump discharge ports to route the hoses through the motor mount tubes. The discharges use aluminum elbows to attach to the water hose. The elbows have to be rotated to accomodate the S7 motor mounts. The elbows are installed using one of several Loctite purpose-specific products. The Loctite can be softened using heat.

I used a heat gun to heat the water pump housing cover to remove the two elbows that need to be rotated. This was a difficult task. Per the instructions, I then installed the elbows dry to check for the proper orientation. When I tried to remove the elbows to apply the Loctite sealer, one of them froze in place. To make a long story short, the threads had apparently galled in place and I damaged the elbow in removing it.

I ordered a replacement elbow, water pump gaskets etc.

I installed the forward motor mount onto the engine. The mount is held in place by 4 large bolts. The bolt heads have to be cross drilled to allow safety-wiring of the bolt heads. The bolts are difficult to get in place, as is the motor mount. I could not get the right top bolt in place with the motor assembled. I removed the right carb/drip tray assembly to gain clearance for installing the bolt. The motor mount was not exactly aligned with the motor. I was able to cajole the mount into place using large diameter dowels as levers.

If I ever repeat this process I will fabricate a bench-top motor mount using the prop flange to hold the motor in a vertical position throughout the preparation process. That would have made this work much easier and would have been a time-saver in the long run.
