I decided to cast lead billets for the counter weights. I used "Altoid" cans as the molds, which worked well. I did try to estimate the amount of lead to use by placing the mold and raw lead on the aileron spades while the ailerons were on the hinge pivots, but the first weight ended up being too large by a considerable margin. I had to do a lot of shaving and removing of excess lead to bring the weight down to where it needed to be.
I used the measured weight of the first unit to estimate the amount of lead needed for the second unit, which worked fairly well. Shaping and trimming the second counter weight took less than half the time of the first.
I primed and painted the finished weights to match the spades (white).
