Brief Description: Elevator Blank, Brake, Part Stowage
Today - much to the delight of my wife - I moved my rudder out of our bedroom and into the garage where I stowed it and the stabilizer in ceiling slings above the garage door. I used 2" nylon HVAC duct strapping between small blocks of wood and the ceiling secured with 2" wood screws into the joists.
Blanked elevator skin from 0.020" at 2200mm long X 800mm wide which is 15mm wider than the developed length specified on the drawing. My plan is make all three bends - starting with the top flange and working around - then drill and cleco to the ribs. Once in this configuration I can mark the top forward edge exactly where it meets the front web then score along this line and bend off the small strip of extra material.
Note: This bend sequence is achievable with the 2-1/2" angle (62.5mm) used to make the bending brake. At 78mm the front web will have no problem fitting around the top/bending plate.
Before reattaching the brake to the bench I added a strip of 1/2" MDF to the under-side of the bench overhang. The primary reason was to provide a harder surface to resist depression of the nut and washer when tightening them down; the 3/4" plywood used too soft for these pressures. It should also add some stiffness to the brake mount.
