Brief Description:  Fuselage kit arrives!

I was notified yesterday that the fuselage kit had arrived at the ABFtrucking terminal. When my last appointment of the day called to reschedule, I flew home, changed clothes, hooked up our trailer to the Suburban, and lit out for south Atlanta. I made it to the terminal just after 4:00 p.m. and they had the fuselage kit loaded in my trailer before 4:30. Miraculously, I hit the freeway before the traffic clogged up and was able to make it home without any battle damage. As I had done before with the wing kit, I grabbed a hammer and pry bar and opened the oysters to see the pearls. The boxes were too heaby to manhandle down to the basement (ABF used a forklift to place them in my trailer). So, I carried the pieces, one or two at a time, down to the basement. I felt like an ant, carrying a prized strawberry down the hole, one tiny morsel at a time. Unpacking yeilded a mountain of filler paper and about three jillion little aluminum pieces. Some of the pieces were very exciting, like the roll bar, the front stick and the instrument panel. Many other pieces were pretty nondescript. It is a little daunting to think that I will smooth, drill, debur and prime each and every one of those small angles and gussets. The thought of beginning fuselage construction is exciting. This is the part of the aircraft that will hold me. I will become intimately familiar with every nook and cranny of the cockpit. Someday, on a long trip, I will have some time at cruise to reflect on certain moments during the construction phase. I am sure that this will be one day that I remember.
