Brief Description:  Started on landing gear wheel fairings

I have been dreading the gear fairings.

First, I had trouble understanding the drawings. I think I am past that.

Next, the shop is shrinking like crazy.

I had a short day in the shop today. I flew up to Lancaster, PA, this morning. Once in Lancaster, I got weathered in, and had to wait the weather out in a diner for a couple of hours, before returning home.

One of the first challenges in the gear fairings is to get the orientation of eveything just right. This requires leveling the plane, with the gear on, but without the gear on the ground. I read other people's logs about how they lifted and stabilized the plane, level on both axis, with all kinds of jacks. I am not shy about buying more tools, but my shop is so small, I just don't have any room for any more. Finally, I came up with a sophisticated jacking system. I lifted the plane, on my back (no engine - only 400# or so, and had my daughter's boyfriend put a drywall bench with two milk crates on it directly under the main wing spar - problem solved. Wheels are perfectly level, 1" off the ground.

Next I started on the main wheel fairings. Initially I thought I overcut these, but they came out perfect. They are all rivet up.

Tomorrow, I will set the main gear brake lines and set the fairings on the gear legs, get them oriented along the axis of flight, and then I can start the wheel pants.

My goal is to get all these fairings done before the plane goes to the avionics shop next month.

I have a short working month ahead of me, because of vacation plans in Florida
