Brief Description: Painted First Wing.
|
|
The painting of the RH wing took place over a weeks time. The priming and sanding was done during the week, and the colors and clear was applied on Sunday.
* I spent several hours sanding after the first two coats of primer. While the fabric areas were great, the areas of metal under the fabric showed a "wave" pattern. I knocked down the high spots, and then applied the final coat of primer. Another 4 hours or so of sanding I had everything pretty smooth.
* The application of paint went pretty well. The biggest problem I had was getting the masking tape to stay stuck. I have been using the 3M blue stuff from the hardware store, but I think I need to find something better because I spend a lot of time reapplying tape that has let go or is lifting.
* The clear coat was a lesson in most all of the flaws that occur in a paint job, but as before, they are small and most of them cannot be seen from 5 feet away.
* I wanted a paint scheme that would be very visible, yet fairly easy to tape off. I have been amazed at how much time the masking takes. I spent about 4 hours taping off the red, and probably 3 hours taping off the black. During a 12 hour day, over half of it is spent taping and masking. -- In reflecting on the process, I would venture that the three colors increase the time needed to paint by at least by a factor of 3 over a single color scheme...., but I think it is worth it!
