Brief Description:  Learning to Paint.

Today was all about learning how to paint.

It seems like it took forever to get everything set up and ready for painting, but I eventually got some fixtures built and sorted out all my airline connections finally resulting in the fresh aroma of paint fumes in the air.

I am starting with the test panels I built while learning to cover. This lets me experiment with different settings and techniques to learn what works for me before I have to do some thing that really counts.

I am using the same materials and process the factory uses, or at least used at one time (they seem to keep changing things to save costs.) In my case I am using airtech fabric primer under PPG DBC base coat and clear coat. I know of others using the Omni line instead of DBC, which is much more cost effective. They are having great success, but I decided to stick to DBC line because that is what my experienced mentors are using, and reviews on the various Internet sites rate the DBC line very highly.

Tonight was all about getting two coats of primer on my test panels. I learned that my 16 ounce mixing cups are too small as I needed about 14 ounces of paint per coat. I was able to see areas that the paint was too light, and I also observed a couple of areas where the paint was going on really thick, and I was able to adjust my techniques to accommodate.

My paint booth is working well. The booties of my Tyvek suit kept sticking to the floor causing me to trip, so I think I will find some boot-less overalls, or just cut them off. My paint air line and breathing air line also tangled up quickly as I worked, so I need to figure something out to keep them more manageable so I don't trip over them.

The next step is the let the panels dry 12-24 hours and then sand them. The sanding process will reveal how well I did, with the defects needing to be sanded out. I notice seemed to have a slight amount of orange peel, 1 piece of trash, and several little "nibs", so my goal in moving on is to learn how to avoid these issues.
