Brief Description:  Installed wheels & tires

I planned to install the 90 degree fittings in the bottom of the gear legs. Well, the fitting won’t clear the brake caliper—so, removed the wheel attach bracket, brake caliper and axle. Installed the fitting, then re-installed the axle, caliper and bracket. Packed the wheel bearings with AeroShell #22 grease as specified by Matco. Installed the wheels, tightened up the axle nuts and drilled a 1/8” hole thru the axle using the nut as a guide (used a 6” long bit). Removed the wheels and reinstalled the axle nuts. I inserted a 1/8” bit into the upper hole to keep the nut in the same position as when I drilled the hole. I used a 90 degree angle attachment to drill the bottom hole. Removed the nuts and cleaned up all of the shavings. Next, I began mounting the tires. I purchased some tire talc at NAPA auto parts. Sprinkled the inside of the tires with talc, then inserted the tubes. Inflated and deflated several times to make sure all the wrinkles were out. I used 3 bar clamps to compress the tire/tube combination. Split the wheels and inserted the bottom half—aligned the valve stem, checked that the tube would not get pinched between the wheel halves. Then I inserted the top half of the wheel, bolted them together and torqued the nuts. Inflated/deflated several times, then installed the assembly on the airplane, followed by the wheel nuts.
