Beginning to wire the radio, so need to get the headset jacks ready. I had previously run the wire to back behind the cockpit for them, so it was just a matter of soldering the jacks on the wire… a job that still took three to four hours. If I had to do it again, I could now do it in half the time. I almost made the mistake of soldering to the wrong tabs; the tabs are on the opposite side of the contact it connects to, not next to it. I’ll eventually have make a plate to mount them to, but at least now I can test the radio after it’s wired.
UPDATE: Funny I mentioned if I had to do it again, I could do it in half the time, because I have to rip it out and do it again. I was only using 2-conductor shielded cable, and used the shield to carry the ground back, which is a no-no. Even through the ground is connected to the shield on the avionics side, it still needs a dedicated wire to run within the shield. For a proper stereo connection, I have 3-conductor shielded wire on the way, and will re-wire. The radio still worked this way, but would have not been absolutely clear of extra noise.
