Brief Description:  Wiring the starter and alternator

A big heavy #4awg wire goes up to the starter from the battery. Normally, a same sized wire would run from the alternator back to the battery, but instead, I’ll let the starter and alternator share the wire. The secret is to connect the starter as usual, then connect that to the alternator using an 8awg wire, but with a 60a circut breaker inline, to protect the alternator from a short.

I was really happy that I found a perfect place to mount the 60a waterproof fuse, just two inches from the starter, then just had to make a 2’ 8awg wire to the alternator. Since these are (+) wires, they would short out the system if they touched the grounded engine, so for these and the starter wire, not only did I cover them all in heat-shrink tubing, but also wrapped them in AMP spiral plastic tubing (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/sprialwrap2.php), and finally covered all bare connections with many coats of liquid electrical tape.
