Every since I flew float ultralights back in the mid-1990s, I dreamed of building a Searey, and now it’s finally going to happen. In 2006, when searching for a new home, the main criteria was that it be on a lake suitable for water operations with the Searey. I joined the Seaplane Pilot’s Association to ensure I choose the right lake. The lakehouse we choose is older, so we’ve spent more than six years updating it, and now that we’re through with all that construction and work and have the house exactly as we want it, it’s time for the plane.

After working on it for about eight months, I achieved my private pilot’s license on May 22, 2012 at 41hrs. I chose to get most of my hours in a new Cessna 162 Skycatcher, because many of its aspects, such as weight, power, and internal/external dimensions were exactly the same as the Searey, and it featured a glass cockpit set of avionics similar to what I’ll put in my plane.

It took about 17 years to get to the point where all things in life aligned to allow my dream aircraft build to begin; it took finding the right job, wife, house, etc. Now, with my bonafide private pilot’s license in hand, I had to re-evaluate that dream to ensure it was the best choice. I painstakingly researched all options in the homebuilt category and realized that not only is the Searey still the best choice, but during that time, the Searey has pulled far and away from any real competition. I’m actually glad I’ve waited until now, because the LSX is so much airplane for the money; the improvements over past Seareys are vast. This plane was borne with a somewhat ultralight heritage, and has matured into a real solid plane of comfort, performance, and efficiency simply not seen what-so-ever in certified aircraft.

My wife and I flew a demo flight with the aircraft’s designer, Kerry Richter. When my wife landed, her first words were “where do we sign up?”, so now she's almost as excited as I am. We put down the deposit, and expect to pick the kit up by the end of 2012.
