Brief Description:  More wing work - 01

I decided to order an improved fuel tank fuel picked probe. They will be here in a few days so I went on to other tasks while I wait for the parts. One minor task involves securing the wing flap hinge pins to prevent them from working their way out of the hinge. I saw several different techniques on the web and the plans just have you drill a hole in the wing skin and safety wire the pins in place. I was not crazy about the safety wire method so I copied an idea from another builders blog. I made two small clips (see image one) from 0.032 al. that are 1/2" wide by 1 3/4" long. After drilling a #8 hole in the center I bent the strip 90 degrees at each end forming a small "U" shaped clip. The wing has a flap support running the length of the flap area. I drilled a #8 hole and riveted a nutplate on the backside using blind rivets. This is not a structural attachment so the blind rivets will be sufficient. In image three you can see the flap hinge pins under the clip and the clip screwed to the nutplate with an 8-32 screw. This will prevent the hinge pins from sliding out of the hinge and be easy to remove when / if I need to remove the flaps.
