Manual Reference:  Rudder Connection
Brief Description:  Connecting the rudder to the pedals, part 1

I connected the rudder pedals to the rudder. First I connected the cables to the rudder with the AN3 bolts, castle nuts, and cotter pins.

The hard part was connecting the cables to the rudder pedals. The plans give specs for a 1/2" thick metal strap: Each cable connects to the pedal using a pair of these steel straps with identically spaced bolt holes. I fabricated one pair using the exact dimensions from the plans and connected it to the left rudder pedal (pilot side).

The hard part: Nailing the bolt hole spacing for the right pedal cable connection. With the rudder centered and the rudder pedals flush, I pulled the right rudder cable snug and measured the space between the rudder cable eye and right pedal hole. I then fabricated a pair of metal straps with bolt holes spaced to that measured distance MINUS 1/16" to take out any slack. I wanted the connection tight, but not too tight: However, I didn't want a loose rudder since that may introduce flutter susceptibility problems.

See image 2: Those rusty straps connected to the cable are the partially completed mounting straps. The fit was good, and the rudder moved freely and properly to the stops, so I cleaned the rust off the straps, primed, and painted.
