Brief Description:  Modified manual riveter

I've repeatedly found areas where the pneumatic rivet puller just won't reach. Most have been accessible with a hand "pop" riveter, obtained at Harbor Freight.

That was simply not the case when I tried to install the upper rudder bearing. I simply could not get even the manual riveter to hold the rivet head flat against the metal.

Annoyed, I deciced to either make it work, or destroy it in the process.

1) Measured the side of the hand riveter against the upper rudder bearing, 6T4-3, and marked the metal that would need to be removed to get clearance.
2) Carefully ground off the necessary metal with a bench grinder, checking to be sure the metal had not been penetrated too far.
3) Installed the mandrel used to pull A5 rivets.
4) Selected a drill bit slightly larger than the mandrel, which looked as though it could give the correct contour to a pulled rivet.
5) Installed bit in drill press, and positioned the riveter vertically beneath it.
6) Carefully drilled away enough metal to provide a suitable contour.
7) Repeated steps 5 and 6 for the mandrel usede with A4 rivets.
8) Removed mandrel, taped off critical areas of the hand riveter, primed with zinc chromate, and painted with black spray paint to match the rest of the riveter.
9) It works!
