Brief Description: Wing rigging - day three
|
|
On to drilling the forward spars. I had already match drilled the spar blocks out to 3/8" before I built the wings. I used Hugh Beckhams's pilot drill bits. Thanks again Hugh! So, my procedure was to first drill the forward attach angles directly to 3/8". For the rear attach angles, it looked impossibly tight to back drill the rear attach angles. Instead, I used a 3/8" transfer punch to mark the aft tunnel web. I then removed the web, re-cleco'd the vertical angle and gusset, and very carefully drilled it out to 3/8" on a drill press. It all pinned together fine -- a major milestone -- and a nice way to start the new year. With the flying surfaces, fuselage, and canopy complete, I'm feeling that the major milestones are behind me, and that I'll finish #583 this year. Now it's time to remove the wings, put everything back in the workshop, and final rivet the spar tunnel.
