Brief Description:  ELT rack installation

I decided to install the Emergency Location Transmitter (ELT) on the boom tube in the baggage compartment. Progressive Aerodyne installs the ELT for the factory assembled planes forward of the dashboard on what they call Panel #6. According to the ELT manual it should be mounted towards the rear of the plane to better ensure survivability and must be firmly fixed to the plane's structure. I think my location better suits these directions than PA's does.
First I bought and installed a galvanized steel exhaust pipe clamp and secured tthat to the aluminum boom tube (and the carpet over the tube). This is to anchor the ELT to the plane's stucture. Then I bought a piece of 1/8" aluminum plate, cut in a 6.5" square, to be the baseplate. I drilled this to slip over the clamp's two threaded U-bolt ends. I also drilled it with four holes to match four of the many pre-drilled holes in the ELT's stainless steel bracket. With four 1" long #10 machine screws, washers, and lock-nuts I securely fixed the bracket to the baseplate. Unfortunately I only had 2 screws with fine thread and 2 with coarse thread, not 4 of either, so that's what I used.
The ELT slips into the bracket and is clamped in place with the stainles steel strap. It faces forward in this horizontal position per the manual and is close to the antennae which is mounted on top of the turtledeck just overhead.
