Brief Description:  ELT

I disregarded Chapter 36 of the LSA manual as I wanted to install my Electronic Locator Trasmitter (ELT) behind the pilot in the baggage compartment on top of the boom tube, instead of up in the bow compartment as the manual called for. My location makes it more accessible, more visible, uses a shorter antennae coax cable, and more closely matches the requirements of the ELT installation manual.
My unit is an ARTEX 345 and comes with a whip antennae, which I previously mounted on the Upper Gap Seal between the wings and directly above the ELT location in the baggage compartment.
It is important to mount the unit very solidly to the airframe so as to allow the accelerometer to trigger the unit in the event of a crash. Running through the middle of the baggage compartment is the 4" diameter boom tube right adjacent to the aluminum main bulkhead frame. That must be the most rigid part of the plane.
For mounting the unit I bought a galvanized steel exhaust clamp that very snuggly fit around the boom tube and provide two threaded rod ends to bolt the ELT mounting tray to.
Included in the kit was a buzzer which I mounted near the ELT on an aluminum pylon member, a remote switch that I mounted in the co-pilot side of the cockpit control panel, and a 15-pin D-Sub connector for the antennae end that plugs into the ELT.
All this work took four sessions and proceeded without any difficulty. Such a pleasure...
