Brief Description:  Forward Cockpit assembly - checking

After reading Derrick Aubuchon's build log I twigged to the fact that there is an updated manual used in the Progressive Aerodyne factory for assembling the LSA models. So I asked Earl O'Hara to send me one on a thumb drive along with the missing Stits fabric and in quick order he did. Took me about 4 hours to print it all out in colour and organize it into four 3-ring binders.

So.... over 470 hours into the project I am having to switch manuals. Going forward my first step will be to check everything I have done against the new manual (refered to with * in front of the manual reference for this log).

Today I started with Chapter 1, being the the Forward Cockpit Assembly. One step that the old manual hadn't called for at this point was installing carpet on the Floor Pan and Heel Rest Cap. So this I did with an eye on the hangar thermometer which was falling through the afternoon from 5C to 2C. The contact cement I was using called for 15C but it set up just fine... quickly too!

The new manual calls for a AN4 Thin Nut on the AN4-40A Bolt securing the Cockpit Tube, Lower Inboard whereas the old manual used a standard nut. Hmmm... since the bolt stuck up above the standard nut I saw no benefit to change to the Thin Nut and carried on.

Also the new manual calls for drilled threaded end AN3-20 bolts to attach the Rudder Cable Extensions to the Rudder Pedal Assemblies instead of the standard AN3-20A bolts of the old manual. Now this makes sense as there is a rotating joint here. Will have to order these right away. 21 Nov update: installed

The final Section 1.5 of this first Chapter 1 describes the installation of Rudder Pedal Extensions, presumably an option for tall pilots. Being only 5'-9" I think I can pass on this.
